Our Mission

The mission of the Cooperative is to serve Los Alamos County and surrounding communities by providing fairly priced, wholesome foods and other goods in an ecologically sustainable, socially responsible, and economically appropriate manner. The Co-op will further strive

  • to emphasize food for people, not for profit;
  • to maintain a high standard of quality for the products it sells;
  • to foster the development of northern New Mexican growers and producers through its purchasing policies;
  • to employ a democratic and cooperative governance structure and ethical business practices;
  • to promote fairness, participation, and empowerment in the workplace and the community;
  • to work to encourage and implement appropriate environmental practices;
  • to promote awareness about food, nutrition, health, and cooperative values;
  • and to be responsive and accountable to the community it serves.

Our Plan

The Los Alamos Cooperative Market hopes to open its doors in late 2007.

The steering committee is working on bylaws and a business plan. The Los Alamos Cooperative Market will incorporate as a "domestic cooperative association" under New Mexico Law. (More information is available at the NM Public Regulation Commission web site.)

The Cooperative will be capitalized by lifetime memberships, member loans, and member investment. More than 120 households have signed up for lifetime memberships. But additional Founding Lifetime Members are needed.

More than 35 households have also become charter annual members. Charter annual members provide operating funds as we move forward with incorporation and bylaws, creating a business plan, and obtaining a market study.

Our member loan and investment programs will be set up in early 2007.

The LA Co-op also is also seeking in-kind assistance with getting our store up and running. Check out our "wish list".

To find out more, attend one of our board meetings or contact any member of the steering committee The minutes of the board meetings are posted to the e-mail list approximately two weeks after the meeting.
